Substation Project Structural Engineer – Join our Power Delivery team at HDR
. We are looking for a skilled engineer to design and manage high‑voltage substation structural and foundation projects up to 500 kV. This role offers the chance to work on cutting‑edge grid infrastructure and to mentor junior staff.
- Design and detail substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including calculations and fabrication drawings.
- Perform foundation design for piers, footings, piles, and other types using industry‑standard software.
- Prepare and review construction and material specifications.
- Assign tasks and provide technical guidance to EITs and non‑structural project team members.
- Conduct quality checks and reviews of project deliverables per HDR QMS requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop and maintain design standards.
- Mentor and train one or more EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects across different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed.
- Some travel may be required.
- Experience designing outdoor high‑voltage switchyards and substations.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, and related standards.
- Proficiency with PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or Micro Station.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in high‑voltage substation projects.
- Knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and other standards.
- Experience with STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalent software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Conceptual, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer license recognized in the location of the position.
- Previous structural engineering experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and structural design software (AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE).
- Experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.

Compensation ranges from $90,682 to $145,990 based on skills, experience, and location.
