This position focuses on public safety by protecting life, property, and the state transportation infrastructure, by providing safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona. The Fuel Tax Unit is responsible for sampling/analyzing fuel sources during roadside enforcement on vehicles of interest and when conducting unannounced inspections to identify fuel tax fraud. Enforces all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance.
Background check and out-of-state travel is required.
- Screen commercial driver/vehicle credentials, weigh commercial vehicles
- Perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections, registration compliance, commercial vehicle safety inspections
- Conduct traffic stops on commercial vehicles and enforce all pertinent laws, rules and regulations
- Collaborate with ADOT’s Financial Management Services group and auditors to use a data‑driven approach in identifying fuel tax evaders
- Provide education and outreach to individuals and businesses within related industries
- Conduct surveillance at fueling stations to detect misuse of dyed diesel fuel and use of class fuel
- Collect information on illegal importation/diversion of untaxed diesel fuel or biodiesel fuels originating outside of Arizona
- Supplement current enforcement efforts with operational details targeting fuel bootlegging and dyed fuel violations
- Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
- Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures
- Search and seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners
- Defensive tactics
- First aid, CPR
- Court systems, procedures and protocols
- Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system
- Principles of report writing
- Previous service as a certified peace officer in Arizona or another state, meeting minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer
- Interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
- Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the general public
- Use and care of firearms
- Operate police equipment in emergency situations
- Exercise discretion in use of force
- Verbal and written communication, writing clear and concise reports
- Problem solving and using good judgment
- Completed basic and advanced training comparable to Arizona basic course

Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws, rules and regulations; computer skills, report writing and basic money handling experience. 1 year of law enforcement experience.
Pre-Employment Requirements- Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certifications
- Weapons certified in accordance with AZPOST standards, obtain CVSA certification within 6 months of hire
- Previously served honorably as a peace officer in Arizona whose certification has lapsed or served in another state may be eligible for AZPOST certification through waiver testing
