Amazon’s Intelligent Cloud Hosting (ICON) Team is looking for a System Development Manager to join our team in San José, Costa Rica. Do you want to ensure a delightful shopping experience for millions of  customers everyday? The Intelligent Hosting (ICON) team is looking for a System Development Manager that is passionate about being a Dev Ops leader for Amazon's ecommerce platform technologies that host Amazon's Global websites.

The ICON team hosts Amazon websites and backend platform services that power the customer experience. We abstract and centralize infrastructure management from service teams, bring agility to business processes, and operate hundreds of Tier‑1 services on behalf of our internal customers. ICON is an early adopter of Amazon’s product offerings and automates the management and operational activities on behalf of developers to strengthen services’ posture towards security, availability, and efficiency so that service developers can innovate on behalf of Amazon’s end customers.

The ICON team is located within the Intelligent Control (ICC) organization who owns connecting our worldwide websites and other consumer experiences such as Kindle, Amazon Video, and Alexa to the internet, as well as ensuring the highest level of availability, security and privacy of the web services that power the experience we deliver to our customers worldwide.

The Role

ICON is looking for a System Development Manager to lead a team of System Development Engineers in San Jose (Costa Rica). Our global team has sites in Seattle, Dublin, Sydney, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. In this role, you are a key leader that influences the building, automating, and operating of Amazon’s current and next generation Intelligent Cloud Hosting technologies used to manage our highly distributed hosting infrastructure.

  • Lead and manage a team that drives organizational standards for operational excellence and resiliency.
  • Establish relationships with internal and external partners and peer stakeholders to understand and meet their needs while operating existing systems at a high level of operational excellence.
  • Lead the team through large‑scale incident management and escalations to resolve outages and communicate with a global audience and senior leadership.
  • Develop and maintain a culture of innovation and operational excellence in the teams.
  • Manage the design and development of next‑generation platform orchestration and automation.
  • Hire, develop, and retain a world‑class engineering team that meets Amazon’s high bar.
  • Have a proven background in developing and operating platforms and services, hiring top talent, technical ability, great communication skills, and a motivation to achieve results in a dynamic fast‑paced environment.
Basic Qualifications
  • Expertise in operational excellence, security compliance, and distributed systems’ resiliency.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle (e.g. coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations).
  • Experience developing in Python or other modern programming language (e.g. C++, Java, C#, or Ruby).
  • Expertise in Linux‑based operating systems.
  • Expertise in operations of highly available and scalable internet systems with large customer base.
  • Experience managing staff and meetings across multiple sites and time zones.
  • Excellent communication abilities, both verbal and written, including long‑form business writing on complex topics.
  • Ability to drive effective teamwork, collaboration and commitment.
  • Excellent analytical problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience developing and improving operational documentation, procedures and workflows.
  • Ability to credibly coordinate between technical teams, peers and business stakeholders.
