Invite by Rodolphe Saadé, the CMA CGM Group joins the organization as a global leader in shipping and logistics, offering an integrated port and air‑freight network. The Vice President and General Counsel will manage all corporate legal initiatives in the U.S. and Canada, working closely with senior management, operational personnel and the company’s U.S. legal staff. This role provides strategic legal advice, oversees the legal function, coordinates outside counsel, and participates in complex business transactions, contract negotiations and litigation.
EssentialDuties / Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and direction to CMA CGM shipping agencies in the United States and Canada.
- Provide U.S. legal advice to foreign entities of the CMA CGM Group.
- Serve as chief liaison on U.S. legal matters with the HO legal department, especially maritime claims.
- Act as lead lawyer/legal advisor on all major business transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures.
- Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs and give ongoing counsel on legal matters and implications.
- Evaluate court cases, define a strategic defense and recommend/approve settlements as appropriate.
- Ensure the company operates in compliance with applicable U.S. laws and regulations.
- Lead and manage the company’s U.S. legal function and staff: contract review, corporate governance, litigation and claims.
- Select, retain, manage and evaluate all outside counsel.
- Advise on legal aspects of financing, including business structures and legal entities.
- Handle general legal matters such as human resources support, corporate contracts, negotiations, bankruptcy, maritime law and litigation.
- Support all North American legal projects or matters.
Knowledge of federal maritime and transportation statutes, U.S. Coast Guard, Customs & Border Protection, and federal agencies; understanding of pending legislation; expertise in ocean carriage and admiralty law; excellent advocacy and negotiating skills; strong interpersonal, management and communication skills; proven ability to make complex decisions, think critically, and manage diverse relationships.
Education and Experience Requirements- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction; licensed or eligible to become licensed in Virginia.
- Minimum of 10 years combined experience in a law firm and/or in‑house legal department.
- Demonstrable legal analytical skills, general business acumen, and expertise in core areas: contract review and management, employment law, corporate governance, civil or commercial litigation.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in the transportation industry, with preference for marine operations.
