Position Summary:

The paralegal in this position will assist with research, calendaring critical dates, aiding attorneys in preparing cases for trial, assisting in preparing Memoranda, disclosure statements, pleadings, motions, appellate briefs, and other documents as appropriate, and gathering and organizing files and documents.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation of pleadings, legal motions, and gather documents and information necessary to respond to discovery requests.
  • Prepare and maintain an index or database of documents.
  • Calendar and docket court appearances, all hearings, depositions, meetings with client agencies, other appointments, and deadlines in Legal Files and Outlook calendars.
  • Maintain paper and electronic case files in accordance with office policy and standards.
  • Review outgoing materials for consistency with the section policy on quality work product.
  • Review for grammatical construction, content, clerical error, and formatting to ensure all legal documents and enclosures are complete and in order.
  • Review incoming correspondence and mail.
  • Distribute in accordance with established office policy and procedure and refer to the appropriate attorney.
  • Trial preparation: trial notebooks, exhibits, witness lists, jury instructions, etc.
  • Confer with the attorney about case status and legal issues.
  • Legal research and cite verification.
  • Assist all support staff with projects.
  • Train new legal support staff.
  • Serve as mentor and legal support resource for all support staff in the Section.
  • Maintain file rooms and general section maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned, as related to the position.
Skills Required:
  • Knowledge of legal concepts, terminology, principles, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of legal research and use of statutes, codes, and other legal resources.
  • Knowledge of filing requirements and legal procedures in administrative, state, and federal courts.
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and principles for writing briefs, reports, and other legal documents in an appropriate format.
  • Knowledge of the functions and jurisdictions of local, state, and Federal courts.
  • Knowledge of discovery procedures, time constraints, and the ability to respond to discovery requests.
  • Knowledge of good file management and effective trial preparation.
  • Skill in gathering and organizing information for discovery and disclosure.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Skill in organizing litigation files.
  • Skill in extracting and utilizing information from statutes, court decisions, legal documents, and related records.
  • Skill in proofreading documents.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize workload to include timely filing and file organization.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate, timely information.
  • Ability to obtain and organize documents.
  • Ability to review a file and understand the legal theories involved.
  • Ability to assist attorney(s) in trial preparation and at trials and hearings.
  • Ability to identify issues, analyze and articulate legal arguments, and assess evidence.
  • Ability to proficiently use a personal computer, e-mail, the internet, electronic case filing systems, as well as electronic case management and document management software.
  • Ability to get along and work well with others.
  • Ability to travel within Arizona, including overnight stays.
Education Required:
  • High School Diploma.
Education Preferred:
  • College Degree (Associate's or Bachelor's).
  • Paralegal Certificate.
Experience Required:
  • Civil litigation experience.
  • Experience assisting an attorney in writing and proofreading documents.
  • 3+ Years of Paralegal Experience.
