Job Description

The Swiss/Turn‑Mill CNC Programmer will manage the CNC‑program creation process for a machine shop with expanding CNC Swiss lathes, CNC Turn‑mill lathes, CNC 3‑axis lathes, CNC 2‑axis lathes and CNC 3‑axis mills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret drawings and create new solid models (when necessary) to generate CNC programs for Swiss lathes and multi‑axis Turn‑Mill (double‑turret, double‑spindle) machines, CNC 3‑axis lathes, CNC 2‑axis lathes and CNC 3‑axis mills using CAD/CAM systems (preferably Part‑Maker, Feature Cam, etc.).
  • Include proper methodology, tooling, cutting speeds, and feeds to generate quality parts that meet product specifications.
  • Set up and produce First Pieces on the Swiss, Turn‑mill machines, CNC 3‑axis lathes, CNC 2‑axis lathes and CNC 3‑axis mills; run jobs as required.
  • Study and interpret drawings, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and set‑up requirements to maximize efficiency.
  • Create set‑up sheets (tool list, x‑y‑z home positions) and communicate tooling requirements, fixtures, etc. to set‑up machinists.
  • Monitor and verify the accuracy of each job’s initial set‑up and final outcome.
  • Revise, update, and maintain all programs and documents based on engineering changes or process‑improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with the machine‑shop supervisor/manager on process improvements and cycle‑time reductions, including testing new cutting tools and processes to balance main/sub‑cycle time.
  • Communicate with set‑up machinists and/or the Machine Shop Supervisor/Manager regarding tooling/fixtures/material requirements for upcoming and/or existing jobs on the floor.
  • Provide shop‑floor assistance with inspection methods, training on machines, machine alarms, and program issues.
  • Work with the Quality Engineer to develop inspection methods, First‑Piece Inspections (FPIs), and in‑process inspection during production runs.
Skills and Requirements
  • Applicant must be ITAR compliant.
  • 5+ years of experience programming Swiss CNC machines and/or Turn‑mill lathes (Tsugami, Star, double‑spindle + double‑turret CNC machines), CNC 3‑axis lathes, CNC 2‑axis lathes and CNC 3‑axis mills.
  • Deep understanding of machining fundamentals and machining‑parameter correlations (SFM, RPM, IPR, IPT, etc.) on cutting tools and work‑piece materials.
  • Knowledge of newer Fanuc controls (18i, 31i), including Tsugami machines (S‑series, B0‑series) and multi‑axis turn‑mill centers; ability to learn and adapt to evolving technology.
  • Knowledge of measuring equipment and its application, including calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, indicators, comparators.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical drawings and specifications; ability to interpret geometric tolerances and dimension call‑outs.
  • Detailed knowledge of programming segments and corresponding operations.
  • Working knowledge of various tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars and inserts used on multiple machines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the AS 9100 quality system.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
  • Familiar or working knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.
