Job Summary: As an Environmental Technician, you will perform field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution that affect health. You will set up and collect ambient air samples, calibrate and test air monitoring instruments, conduct data collection checks, and troubleshoot instrument repairs.
Job Location1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007. Position based in the Phoenix office.
SalaryEnvironmental Technician 1: $40K-$45K
Environmental Technician 2: $45K-$50K
Environmental Technician 3: $55K-$60K
- Work approximately 50% in the field conducting hands‑on instrument maintenance/service, verifications, calibration, and completion of all required service logs, field sheets and documentation in accordance with SOPs, QAPPs and the EPA QA Handbook.
- Conduct remote air monitoring site visits for assigned sites according to the EPA schedule and ADEQ QAPPs.
- Understand the operation of the air monitoring sites, including ambient air monitoring instruments, meteorological instruments, data acquisition, sample setup and retrieval, and all auxiliary equipment.
- Verify data for continuous and manual instruments. Review reports, graphs, charts or databases to identify outliers, malfunctions or anomalies.
- Document and complete electronic field sheets, site logs, instrument logs, instrument change‑out sheets, chain of custody, vehicle logs, travel logs and sample shipping.
- Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform or lead projects under direction of a unit lead or manager.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in gaseous and particulate instrumentation, Auto‑GC, communication equipment, quality assurance and control, and data entry using relational databases; familiarity with environmental monitoring techniques, methodologies, and federal/state regulations.
- Ability to set up, program, and troubleshoot communications equipment; general knowledge of Air Vision, CRBasic and other communication programming languages.
- Knowledge and/or experience in environmental technology, mechanical engineering or electrical technician.
- Ability to operate, maintain and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment; collect representative samples according to SOPs; follow guidance documents.
- ET 1:
Associate's degree plus 0‑3 years of experience conducting environmental monitoring or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field with no prior experience. Military or trade training may be evaluated for equivalency. - ET 2:
Associate's degree plus 4‑7 years of experience conducting environmental monitoring or a Bachelor’s degree or higher with 1‑5 years of experience. Military or trade training may be evaluated for equivalency. - ET 3:
Associate's degree plus 7‑10 years of experience conducting environmental monitoring or a Bachelor’s degree or higher with 6‑8 years of experience. Military or trade training may be evaluated for equivalency.
Driving may be an essential function. A valid driver’s license is required. All newly hired State employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
