Job SummaryUnder the general supervision of a Hospital Security Shift Commander (SO3) or Hospital Security Lead (SO2), a Security Officer 1 will assist Nursing and medical staff in maintaining a safe, secure therapeutic environment for patients, residents, and staff by following policies and acting safely at all times. Responsibilities include daily rounds, egress/ingress control, responding to codes and emergencies, and assisting with conflict resolution, vehicle and radio maintenance, and documentation.
Job Duties- Perform daily rounds, including egress/ingress control for Civil Hospital, Forensic Hospital, and Arizona Community Protection & Treatment Center, ensuring health and safety at all times.
- Respond to codes and incidents, de‑escalating critical patient conflicts and physically restraining patients when needed to maintain safety.
- Respond to fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies per established procedures.
- Write and submit related reports; assist with problem solving and decision making; maintain vehicle and radio equipment and perform safety inspections; attend related training classes.
- Perform other duties as assigned related to the position (typically 5%–10%).
- Federal and state laws and due process related to safety and security of the hospital campus.
- Proper methods and circumstances requiring use of force and patient transport.
- Seclusion, restraints, and associated risks.
- Operating two‑way radios, security cameras, security devices, electronic doors, sound equipment, telephone and intercom systems.
- Evacuation procedures, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, test valves, and operation.
- Report writing.
- Performance Management (PM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.
- Applying and interpreting safety, security, custody, and consequence measures.
- Personal safety techniques (NVCI) and use of restraints and defense control devices.
- Basic first aid and CPR; oral and written communication.
- Establishing effective working relationships with staff, patients, residents, visitors, and local law enforcement agencies.
- Hospital emergency response techniques.
- On‑the‑job training for new and existing staff.
- Verbal de‑escalation techniques (CPI Verbal Escalation Continuum).
- Learn and interpret hospital rules, regulations, and procedures related to safety and security.
- Drive state vehicles and recognize/report safety hazards.
- Respond to hospital‑related codes and provide verbal/physical intervention in critical patient interactions.
- Guide and lead staff from various disciplines in proper NVCI techniques.
- Maintain a calm temperament during stress.
- Apply appropriate restraint techniques.
- Attend training at alternate locations or travel when necessary.
- Support a diverse, multicultural workforce and promote equality and an inclusive environment.
At least one year of progressive responsibility in a security and/or safety setting, preferably in a mental health care facility, hospital/ institutional security, or law‑enforcement experience.
Pre-Employment Requirements- Valid Driver’s License.
- Obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certification.
- Possess a valid Level 1 fingerprint clearance card issued under A.R.S. 41‑1758.07 or apply within seven working days after starting.
