DutiesDuring their careers, special agents perform assignments in investigations and protection, often at multiple duty stations across the U.S. and abroad.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing protection for various protectees.
- Conducting criminal investigations related to financial obligations of the United States.
- Planning and implementing security designs for National Special Security Events.

Requirements- U.S. citizenship
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to carry and use a firearm; firearm proficiency is mandatory
- Be at least 21 years old at application and under 37 at conditional offer, unless prior federal law enforcement service qualifies for age exceptions. Veterans' preference applicants must receive a conditional offer before age 40.
- Obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance
- Visual acuity of no worse than 20/100 binocular, corrected to 20/20 in each eye
- Hearing loss not exceeding 25 decibels in each ear at specified frequencies
- Pass a drug test prior to appointment and undergo random drug testing during employment
- Complete 13 weeks of training at FLETC, Glynco, GA, and 18 weeks at the James J. Rowley Training Center, Laurel, MD
- Willingness to accept assignments across the U.S. and overseas
- Register with the Selective Service System or be exempt (for male applicants born after December 31, 1959)
