Job Description
The purpose of the Fire Alarm & Security Technician position is to install, troubleshoot, service and repair fire alarm and security systems, and other fire and life safety products with minimal supervision.
EssentialJob Duties
- Diagnose and troubleshoot fault conditions, including ground faults, for fire alarm systems.
- Repair or replace damaged fire alarm components such as Facility Alarm Control Panel (FACP), power supplies, alarm‑initiating devices, etc.
- Maintain knowledge of various manufacturers’ clean agent and high‑pressure suppression systems.
- Appropriately use required tools and test equipment (multimeter, megger, laptop for programming, lifts, etc.) to repair or replace fire alarm and suppression system components.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of fire alarm codes and standards.
- Programming and software knowledge for multiple fire alarm systems used when removing or replacing components.
- Safely follow and perform procedures for handling, removing, and replacing explosive actuators such as squibs and gas cartridge actuators.
- Communicate professionally with internal and external customers and off‑site monitoring companies.
- Be punctual to required work locations and complete scheduled projects on time.
- Use Field Service Lightning to track work orders, materials needed, time on job, etc.
- Complete documentation on work orders.
- Understand and follow SFP’s Safety program, SDS book, hazardous communication program, policies, and procedures; participate in weekly toolbox talks and know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project.
- Maintain company‑provided vehicle in a clean and well‑maintained condition per company policies.
- Be placed on on‑call status as required by location to handle emergency service requests.
- Periodically attend seminars or similar education/training sessions to stay abreast of latest technology, codes, and standards changes.
- Train service technician trainees on all applicable aspects of fire protection.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, Certifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- NICET or state‑specific certification (preferred).
- 2 years of experience in the Fire Life Safety industry, specifically in Fire Alarm (required).
- NICET Level 1 Fire Alarm Certification (strongly preferred).
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with employees and customers (required).
- 2 years using business intelligence systems, Sage 300 CRE, or similar (preferred).
- 2 years of professional computer skills (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record (required).
- Compliance with SFP’s Drug and Alcohol policy and background screening requirements (required).
- Occasional travel up to 20% (required).

Physical Requirements:
Frequently required to bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders, and stairs, kneel, lift >50lbs, reach above and below shoulders, stand and walk for extended periods. Required to see in color, close and far distances, peripheral, depth, and adjust focus. Occasionally required to balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift >50lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.
Work Environment:
Often work outdoors in hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise. Occasionally work indoors in an office setting, alone or with others. Must consistently wear all appropriate personal protective equipment as required by company safety policies while visiting locations.
