Rail Vehicle Mechanic – Valley Metro RPTA
Shift Differential Offered
: 2nd and 3rd shifts
Salary Range: $27.49 – $41.23 per hour (starting rate typically $27.49 – $34.36). Hiring bonus of $2,000.00.
The Rail Vehicle Mechanic performs skilled mechanical and minor electrical duties related to inspection, preventive and corrective maintenance of rail vehicles and related equipment. Duties include operating repair equipment, documenting work, and following all safety policies.
Responsibilities- Support a 24‑hour/7‑day rail operation with rotating shifts, overtime and emergency response.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform safety and preventive maintenance inspections on rail vehicles.
- Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and other systems of rail vehicles.
- Read and interpret basic electrical and pneumatic schematics.
- Perform basic repairs to electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components.
- Inspect, repair and test malfunctions to restore rail vehicles to service.
- Respond to off‑site emergencies.
- Use and operate shop equipment and tools for maintenance and repair.
- Comply with all safety policies, attend safety training and practice safe work processes.
- Document and record work performed, parts, and materials used.
- Drive continuous improvement of operations and work processes.
- Assist in cross‑training of colleagues and maintain shop cleanliness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Two (2) years of experience in skilled mechanical work, including inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of light/heavy equipment, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, odd and unusual hours; may be called in on days off or respond to emergencies.
- Experience with rail vehicles and equipment, heavy‑duty truck repair and maintenance or automotive technology.
- HVAC Certification.
Applicants must qualify to operate rail vehicles and successfully pass rail vehicle operator safety training. Employment is contingent on a physical examination, background investigation, drug screen, and a valid Arizona Driver's License.
Physical Demands / Work EnvironmentTypical tasks include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting (up to 50–100 lbs with assistance), and repetitive motions. Work is performed in a shop environment and outdoors under various weather conditions. Exposure to electrical hazards, vibrations, chemicals, and noise is common.
