Chaperone / Community Volunteer / Volunteer Coach
Purpose StatementThe job of Assistant Coach is to design and implement program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport; provide supervision of student athletes during all aspects of their participation; use sound instructional techniques to oversee the program; and serve as a positive role model to student athletes, the community, and various organizations.
Essential Functions- Assess student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback on individual performance and determining team placement.
- Attend a variety of meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information related to the role.
- Communicate with parents, students, officials, administrators, and community for the purpose of providing information, assistance, and direction.
- Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Maintain a variety of records (e.g., game/student statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories) to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
- Manage uniforms, equipment, and school facilities to maintain items responsibly and safely.
- Monitor student athletes’ academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide appropriate intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) for students needing assistance.
- Supervise student athletes during all participation to ensure activities are conducted in an environment with minimal risk of injury.
- Teach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies, and tactics for the purpose of preparing the team and individual athletes for competition.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS:
Adapt to changing priorities; administer first aid; apply laws, codes, policies, and regulations; organize and communicate information and concepts.
KNOWLEDGE:
Basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios); interpret technical information; write technical materials; speak persuasively; analyze situations; define issues; draw conclusions; knowledge of equipment used in athletic activities; injury prevention and treatment protocols; participant eligibility, attendance, and discipline guidelines; public relations protocols; safety practices and procedures.
ABILITY:
Schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and collate data; work with diverse individuals and groups; operate equipment; problem‑solve and create action plans; communicate with varied backgrounds; exhibit leadership; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; enforce discipline; work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
Drive impacts under limited supervision; direct personnel within a small work unit; use cross‑unit resources; continually impact organization services.
Work EnvironmentOccasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine‑finger dexterity. Job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Exposed to temperature extremes and injury risk.
ExperienceJob‑related experience required.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent.
EquivalencyEquivalency considerations applicable.
Required Testing, Certificates, and LicensesCertificates and licenses required as per district policy.
Continuing Education/TrainingOngoing training required.
Clearances- Criminal background clearance required.
