Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the building principal, assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and help free certified employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls, enabling them to contribute to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
- Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
- Assist professional staff in administering and grading classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
- Help prepare classroom materials and strategies to reinforce instructional content based on individual student needs.
- Maintain records documenting student learning and performance.
- Support classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions and maintain a safe, orderly environment.
- Supervise students in non-instructional areas such as lunch, bus duty, playground, hallways, and study halls.
- Assist with supervision during field trips.
- Construct, copy, distribute, and use educational materials as needed.
- Support parent contact efforts to foster effective involvement in student education.
- Assist students with special needs, including those with IEPs, to maximize inclusion and achievement.
- Help students with physical or mental disabilities with daily activities to maximize participation.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures, especially when assisting students with disabilities.
- May assist in training other paraprofessionals.
Additional Duties
- Assist guidance, pupil services staff, or administration as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as computers and copiers.
Travel Requirements
Travel between schools or to central offices may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to follow instructions in written or oral form.
- Basic arithmetic skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Proficiency with personal computers and software (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with diverse groups and maintain confidentiality.
- Supportive and compassionate approach to students with special needs.
- Ability to establish cooperative relationships and communicate effectively.
Physical and Mental Demands
Work in standard school environments and outdoors during activities. Refer to physical, sensory, and environmental requirements documentation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of college coursework or passing relevant exams as per NCLB.
- Experience with special needs children is desirable.
