Project Overview

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep‑water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant’s cooling system. Key elements include:

  • 5‑km‑long tunnel built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM)
  • Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore)
  • An offshore modular intake structure resting on the lake bed
Responsibilities
  • Manage the in‑tunnel, LU/LO and surface monitoring teams
  • Ensure accurate acquisition of data
  • Collect all monitoring data in time for daily review
  • Program data for the tunnel guidance software
  • Liaise with JV SCL Engineering team and the client regarding daily monitoring reports and queries
  • Develop junior members of staff within the team
  • Attend daily SRG (Shift Review Group) meetings as required and report back to the team
  • Manage resources and equipment available to the team for monitoring activities
  • Organise additional survey resources when required to cover additional works instructed by the client
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to safety
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Contribute to the sustainability agenda
Qualifications
  • Degree in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Surveying, or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in construction surveying, preferably in heavy‑civil works with tunnel or underground projects
  • Extensive knowledge of SCL tunnel monitoring, construction & surveying
  • Strong experience managing a large team across split locations
  • Experience with monitoring systems, geodetic & geotechnical
  • Very good knowledge of computer systems and modern survey equipment with data transmission
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, capable of working in multidisciplinary and multicultural project environments
  • A proactive, field‑oriented mindset with strong problem‑solving capabilities
  • Experience working in nuclear‑regulated environments is an asset
