The mission of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is to protect and preserve South Dakota’s natural resources while supporting a prosperous economy and healthy communities.

• Conduct technical reviews of water use applications to ensure availability and prevent impairment.
• Inspect water systems and dams for safety compliance.
• Participate in lake level surveys and manage the state’s observation well network.
• Investigate complaints, resolve disputes, license well drillers, and enforce construction standards.
• Testify before the Water Management Board and recommend water permit approvals.
• Utilize GIS and Microsoft Office tools for analysis and documentation.
• Provide customer service and technical assistance on water rights issues.

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental, civil, geological, or related engineering.
• Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
• Desire to serve South Dakota citizens and protect water resources.
• Strong decision‑making skills grounded in engineering guidelines.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.

Preference given to candidates who have passed the Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering exam or who are eligible to obtain licensure. Training will be provided to pursue a Professional Engineering license.

Valid South Dakota driver’s license required.
