Responsibilities- Maintains daily contact with offenders, to assist them with their day-to-day living in a correctional facility and to organize their activities while providing motivation and guidance; facilitates scheduling and program options to allow offenders to learn how to change their criminal behavior.
- Department of Correction's Inmate Living Guide, classification system and post operational rules (POR);
- Department of Correction's policies and the institution's operations and procedures;
- modern concepts, principles, and practices related to the re-entry of an offender back into society;
- attitude, problems, and behavior of incarcerated individuals;
- programs available for rehabilitation of offenders;
- knowledge of offender visiting policy;
- Microsoft office products specifically Word and Excel;
- the Use of Force Continuum;
- the Disciplinary (DHO) policy and its implementation;
- de-escalation techniques;
- multi-generational workforce.
- communicate and document logically, accurately, and concisely all pertinent information and decisions;
- make proper responses to safety and security problems;
- relate to and establish rapport with offenders and to assist them in their initial adaptation to prison life;
- plan, organize, schedule, and direct the work of others;
- apply department policies and institution operations and procedures for the assigned housing unit;
- maintain composure under stressful conditions or tense situations and de-escalate the situation(s);
- participate in the criminal justice systems, regarding the treatment of inmates and/or incarcerated individuals, which includes state statue, American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), and department and administrative regulations and policies, standards and guidelines;
- enforce and uphold department policy, procedure and practice;
- study information and recount events in a written, comprehensive and legible manner;
- incorporate the SDDOC Mission Statement while completing daily job duties;
- willingness to respectfully work with a diverse population;
- conduct searches (general area, metal detector, pat, perimeter, unclothed or vehicle);
- operate communications equipment in a professional manner (e.g., two-way radio, telephone, public address equipment);
- willingness to follow chain of command;
- work as a team with a diverse group of people.
- Provides work direction to Correctional Officers on the unit and performs security operations to ensure staff and offender safety and unit security.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to security staff assigned to their supervision chain.
- Make work assignments based on facility operations and institutional needs.
- Coordinate with the OIC to ensure appropriate floor coverage.
- Communicate professionally with both staff and offender population.
- Conduct formal and informal counts and emergency counts.
- Conduct searches per policy.
- Maintain controlled movement of offender population.
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations.
- Follow established tool and key control.
- Assist the Officer In Charge (OIC) in daily management tasks.
- Performs other work as assigned.
