Overview

POSITION TITLE: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Agency: Hughes County Jail

Location: Pierre, SD

Part-time: Evenings and Weekends

Salary: $29.92 - $32.36/hour based on experience

Hughes County is looking for a Part-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our team at the Hughes County Jail in Pierre. This position includes some evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors and charts patients' behaviors, symptoms, and reactions to medications and dietary needs to provide doctors/nurse practitioners with accurate information necessary to implement proper patient care and treatment; observes, evaluates, and charts information pertaining to patients' needs; provides bedside care and maintenance according to an established nursing care plan.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications, treatments, and therapies to ensure correct treatment is administered properly in a timely and competent manner; develops and promotes a therapeutic, clean, and orderly care environment; orders medications and clinic supplies.
  • Conducts individual and group sessions with patients and families to provide information and address concerns such as medication side effects, family planning, first aid, and preventive health care, when indicated.
  • Assists doctors/nurse practitioners with rounds, minor procedures, and dressing changes to ensure quality patient care; schedules patients' appointments; obtains and maintains patients' health history records.
  • Collaborates with registered nurses to provide appropriate and efficient direct patient care services; reports status of clinic and patients' conditions or symptoms to a registered nurse or doctor/nurse practitioner; works with supervisor to formulate and update nursing care and/or individual treatment plans.
  • Challenges and problems include contributing to the assessment of physical conditions and medication side effects on patients; administering and monitoring medications and treatments; maintaining current medical records; instructing and monitoring direct care staff; ensuring timely, accurate, and efficient patient care; managing conflicts between clients; and applying and administering new or changed patient treatment plans.
  • Decision-making authority includes observing, contributing to assessments, and recording a variety of client symptoms, behaviors, and needs and reporting all data to an RN/doctor/nurse practitioner; administering medications and treatments; and determining and providing needed emergency care. Decisions referred include changes in patient treatment or care, critical situations requiring higher level medical care, and prescribed medications or treatments.
  • Contact with others involves daily contact with inmates to provide treatments and medication; with registered nurses to report daily clinic or clinic situations, discuss patient care and staffing, and receive instructions; direct care staff to give work direction and to obtain and receive information on patient care; and with the pharmacy to obtain medications. Weekly contact with doctors/nurse practitioners to receive medication and treatment orders and directions concerning laboratory follow-up.
  • Performs other work as assigned.
  • What We Require
    • Graduation from an accredited educational institution possessing a Licensed Practical Nurse degree.
    • Must have LPN licensed from State of South Dakota.
    • Possession of a valid South Dakota Driver’s License.
    • Background check and pre-employment drug screen before hire.
    • CPR Certified

    This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

    This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.

    Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
