ICU & High Care Unit Manager Vacancy

Eden Gardens Private Hospital is inviting applications for an experienced ICU Unit Manager to join our nursing management team. This is an opportunity for a suitably qualified Registered Nurse with critical care experience and nursing management expertise to take responsibility for the effective management of the hospital’s ICU and High Care units.

Reporting to the Nursing Services Manager, the Unit Manager – ICU & High Care will play an important role in ensuring the delivery of quality nursing care, maintaining professional nursing standards and supporting positive patient outcomes. The successful candidate will provide strong clinical leadership while managing staff, resources, quality improvement initiatives and the day-to-day operations of the unit.

ICU Unit Manager Responsibilities
  • Ensuring optimal utilisation of nursing staff and maintaining sufficient staffing levels at all times.
  • Managing the nursing budget and promoting financial efficiency within the unit.
  • Managing nursing staff in accordance with the Basic Conditions of Employment and the hospital’s Disciplinary Code.
  • Assisting with staff planning, recruitment and selection.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships between doctors, nursing staff and patients.
  • Participating actively in quality improvement initiatives aimed at achieving positive patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.
  • Preparing accurate daily, weekly and monthly reports.
  • Conducting regular audits and risk assessments and analysing relevant data.
  • Initiating quality improvement strategies within the unit and participating in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.
  • Developing strategic plans to support the efficient functioning of the ICU and High Care units.
  • Managing day-to-day operational challenges and problem-solving within the unit.
  • Ensuring that all patient-care documentation is completed accurately and timeously.
  • Maintaining a customer-focused approach that recognises the value of every patient.
  • Ensuring adherence to infection prevention practices and standard precautions.
Skills, Knowledge and Competencies

The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership and mentoring skills
, with the ability to guide and support nursing staff while maintaining professional standards. Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities are essential for this position.

Applicants should have excellent communication, interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills, together with a commitment to continuous improvement. The successful candidate should also be able to manage critical care nursing standards and contribute to in-service training initiatives.

Additional competencies required for the role include clinical supervision, adaptability, teamwork, relationship building, professional and technical proficiency, attention to detail and the ability to engage effectively with diversity.

The role requires a resilient and ethical healthcare professional who can respond effectively to challenging situations while maintaining a strong focus on patient care and service excellence.

Minimum Requirements
  • Registered as a Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Diploma in Critical Care.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a nursing management capacity.
  • Computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Word and Excel, is desirable.
  • Previous private hospital experience will be an added advantage.
