Summary of

Job Duties:

A long-term goal of UAPB is to develop and contribute to the next generation of scientists trained in FANH and USDA careers. The first proposed approach to accomplishing this goal is to build and sustain partnerships with USDA offices, public schools, and surrounding 4H clubs to introduce youth to FANH and USDA careers at an early age through peer-to-peer mentoring, summer camps, field trips, sponsorship of a Junior MANRRS Chapter, and promote farm-to-school initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the UAPB Livestock Farm, including overseeing livestock (cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, etc.).
  • Assist the animal science faculty and the farm manager. Oversee cleanliness and maintenance of animal facilities (cattle handling facility, goat barn, farrowing house, pig units, rabbit units, poultry facility).
  • Facilitate student outreach during laboratory sessions and on/off-campus farm demonstrations.
  • Conduct/data protocols on the farm; mentor/supervise student helpers; conduct farm tours.
  • Monitor livestock health; develop and assist with animal science labs.
  • Assist with facility maintenance and inventory reporting; report plumbing/hydrant issues; assist with vaccinations, de-worming, de-horning, castration and hoof trimming; pasture, reproduction and feed management.
  • Assist with experimental protocols: coordinate with researchers, report deviations, and assist graduate students.
  • Assist with tours and outreach; water and feed livestock daily; order lab and field supplies; collect samples (fecal, blood); keep records.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a high school diploma with 5+ years of experience or a B.S. in biology or animal science or related field with 2+ years of experience. Experience in data collection/processing, feed analysis, collection of animal samples, experimental design, and farm maintenance; computer literate.

Personal Characteristics: Ability to assume responsibility, work with limited supervision, complete tasks timely, be courteous and disciplined, and foster good working relationships with coworkers.
