Summary of

Job Duties

A long-term goal of UAPB is to develop and contribute to the next generation of scientists trained in FANH and USDA careers. The first proposed approach is to build and sustain partnerships with USDA offices, public schools, and surrounding 4H clubs to introduce youth to FANH and USDA careers through peer-to-peer mentoring, summer camps for teachers with students, field trips, junior MANRRS sponsorship, and farm-to-school initiatives to provide non-formal educational opportunities and positive youth development.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Manage the UAPB Livestock Farm, including livestock care (cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, etc.).
  • Assist the animal science faculty and farm manager; oversee cleanliness and maintenance of animal facilities (cattle handling facility, goat barn, farrowing house, pig units, rabbit units, poultry facility).
  • Support student outreach activities during laboratory sessions and on/off-campus demonstrations.
  • Maintain data protocols on the farm; mentor/supervise student helpers.
  • Conduct farm tours and monitor livestock health.
  • Develop and assist with animal science labs; assist with facility maintenance and reporting needs to the Farm Manager.
  • Oversee inventory and supply needs; report issues (plumbing, hydrants) to Farm Manager.
  • Milk animals as needed and assist with breeding-related tasks (calving, mastitis care, bottle feeding).
  • Assist with vaccination, de-worming, de-horning, castration and hoof trimming; assist with pasture, reproduction and feed management.
  • Assist with experimental protocols and coordination with researchers; assist graduate students as needed.
  • Conduct tours with Outreach Director; water and feed research animals daily; assist with ordering lab and field supplies; assist with sample collection and record keeping.
Qualifications

A minimum of a high school diploma with 5+ years of experience or a B.S. in biology or animal science or a related field with 2+ years of experience. Must have experience in data collection and processing, feed analysis, collection of animal samples, experimental design, and farm maintenance; computer literate.

The candidate should show responsibility, work with minimal supervision, complete tasks timely, be courteous and disciplined, and maintain good working relationships with colleagues.

Salary

Salary: $38,500.00
