About the Role:

The Laboratory Technician position in the lab is the entry level of technicians in the department. It is expected that Laboratory Technician employees have a general understanding of the entire lab from all responsibilities and functions. It is expected that, to qualify for this position, it is required that you have completed all of the tasks and functions identified below.

What You’re Going to Do:

Extruders
  • Analyze burr holes twice per shift.
  • Conduct heat seal and micro pit tests on every 5th reel sample for Extruders #6, 7, 8, and 9, ensuring product consistency and durability.
  • Perform pinhole, dyne treatment, and streak tests on every 5th reel sample for Extruders #6, 7, 8, and 9 to detect any surface or treatment issues.
  • Conduct aged adhesion (X-cut) tests on every 5th reel sample for Extruders #6,7,8, and 9.
  • Check dyne solutions daily to ensure they are not expired and replace them as needed to maintain testing accuracy.
  • Change burr hole and pinhole solutions every Monday to keep testing conditions optimal.
  • Monitor the temperature on the heat sealer, ensuring it is operating within the required parameters.
  • Complete the standardization report regularly to document test results and maintain equipment calibration records.
  • Complete the coffee wicking testing for the new coffee run.
Humidity
  • Change out lactic acid and Sorbit P solutions at the start of every shift to maintain accurate testing conditions.
  • Calibrate the Huygen bond tester, manual opacity meter, and brightness meters to ensure consistent and reliable results.
  • Perform manual internal bond tests to assess the paper's strength and integrity.
  • Manually test wet and dry tensile strength to measure the paper's ability to endure stress and ensure durability.
  • Conduct manual brightness and fluorescence tests to verify the paper's visual quality.
  • Perform Z-Directional Tensile (ZDT) tests manually to determine the internal bond strength of the paper and its resistance to separation.
  • Manually conduct modified excello tests to measure the amount of liquid absorbed through the edges of coated samples. Test edge smoothness manually to evaluate the quality of sample finishes.
  • Manually test for the presence of metals in samples to ensure product quality and safety.
  • Perform manual checks for curls in paper samples to ensure they maintain flatness.
  • Manually test the static coefficient of friction to assess the surface friction of samples.
  • Conduct dirt count tests manually to quantify contaminants in paper samples.
  • Complete the daily checklist and perform necessary checks and calibrations to keep all equipment running efficiently.
  • Responsible for coffee wicking testing for the new run.
  • Complete Cobb testing.
  • Responsible for any new and/or past tests needed to get the results for making sure the paper machine is in alignment for good paper.
General
  • Housekeeping responsibilities during and at the end of the shift.
  • Ensure the lab stays organized and clean throughout the day to promote safety and efficiency.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols, ensuring work surfaces and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Change nitric acid out once per week/when necessary.
  • Ensure proper handling, cutting, and storage of samples in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Must have passed the qualification test for the Tech IV position.
Physical Requirements:

Standing for long periods of time. Ability to climb stairs. Walking throughout the lab and around the mill to gather samples or complete tasks. Repetitious movements while performing tasks. Visually inspecting products and using testing equipment that may be close or a few feet away. Using hands and fingers to handle objects / samples. Bending, stretching, stooping, twisting, or reaching may be required.
