Position Overview: The Clinical Coding Specialist III thoroughly reviews patient medical records to accurately code diagnoses and procedures, verifies supporting documentation, assists with medical record audits, and stays current with coding regulations, including ICD and CPT updates. This role also serves as backup for coding, billing, and auditing tasks.
Responsibilities- Code complex inpatient records accurately.
- Demonstrate proficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Identify principal diagnosis and appropriate MS-DRG.
- Complete coding of records, including secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-PCS.
- Write compliant coding queries.
- Degree in HIM; RHIA or RHIT preferred; CCS required.
- At least 4 years of hospital coding experience, including 2 years inpatient.
- Experience in DRG validation or chart auditing preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
- Minimum 90% score on competency assessment.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of regulatory documentation requirements (e.g., DNV, Joint Commission).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, decision-making ability.
- Self-motivated with a good understanding of prospective payment systems.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in computerized coding tools and Windows environment.
Primary office setting with minimal conversation to maintain concentration.
Physical Requirements- Ability to sit for long periods.
- Good visual acuity and numerical perception.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Motor coordination for computer operation.
