Engineer – Protection Analyst
Join Cleco, a leader in clean, smart energy solutions, to drive innovation in electrical protection systems. The Engineer II – Protection Analyst monitors, evaluates, and optimizes the performance of generation, transmission, and protection equipment, supporting system reliability and compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Champion a culture of transparency, safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
- Serve as subject‑matter expert during regulatory audits of generation and transmission protection systems.
- Administer and configure disturbance reporting systems for the transmission network, recommending installations or removals as needed.
- Develop and maintain the transmission short‑circuit model, conduct fault studies, and provide results to Cleco customers and internal departments.
- Acquire and analyze disturbance records to locate faults, aid service restoration, and verify proper equipment operation.
- Maintain operational records, performance metrics, and lightning detection data, integrating lightning system data into disturbance analysis.
- Create compliance reports on fault detection and analysis, coordinating with the compliance monitoring department.
- Perform protection fault studies to support setting development and verification of coordinated operation.
- Monitor budget adherence and provide variance explanations.
- Assist with system restoration after catastrophic events through communication and situational awareness.
- Proactively report required information to management.
- Design monitoring systems as needed to meet departmental objectives.
Required Education, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or NCEES‑certified FE eligibility.
- 3–5+ years of related experience.
- Step progression based on skill proficiency and job scope.
- Strong business acumen within the utility industry.
- In‑depth knowledge of leading protection system practices.
- Effective planning and project management skills.
- Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job.
- Team‑oriented, collegial communication style.
- Progression limited to critical individual capabilities and business needs, supported by market data.
- FE Certification preferred.
