Position Overview

The Foundation Field Technician is responsible for performing field inspections, testing, and data collection related to foundation construction and geotechnical engineering. This entry‑level role supports foundation projects including deep foundations, drilled piers, driven piles, ground improvement, and related structural systems. Working under the supervision of senior technicians and engineers, the technician ensures compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements.

This role involves site work, detailed documentation, and collaboration with construction and engineering teams to help ensure the safe and proper installation of foundation systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field observations, testing, and documentation during the installation of foundation systems (e.g., drilled shafts, auger cast piles, driven piles, helical piers).
  • Collect and log field data including foundation depths, installation torque or blow counts, concrete volumes, rebar placement, and alignment.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure they conform to project specifications and geotechnical recommendations.
  • Conduct on‑site testing such as concrete sampling, slump tests, air content, and temperature measurements during foundation pours.
  • Document findings and prepare accurate and timely field reports, logs, and daily summaries.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and field supervisors to report progress and identify any non‑conformance or issues.
  • Ensure all equipment used is calibrated, maintained, and operated according to company standards.
  • Follow project schedules and meet daily site responsibilities with flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.
  • Adhere to all site‑specific and company‑wide safety protocols, including the use of required PPE.
  • Participate in training, certification, and development opportunities to enhance technical knowledge and skills.
  • Support other field‑testing duties as needed for geotechnical and construction materials testing projects.
Qualifications

  • 0–3 years of experience in a field‑based or foundation‑related construction preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; ability to operate company‑assigned vehicles safely.
  • Industry certifications such as ACI Level 1 Concrete Testing, or ability to obtain within a specified time period.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, following OSHA standards and company safety policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Familiarity with common foundation construction methods and terminology is a plus.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Field Data Collection (FDC) software or similar industry tools.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret blueprints, procedures, manuals, technical documents, and reports related to drilling, safety, and project requirements.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working in various weather and environmental conditions.
  • Efficient time management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
