The Volunteer Engagement & Development Manager is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high impact, interactive learning experiences that support IEEE Technical Activities (TA) volunteers across the full volunteer lifecycle. Serving as the primary instructional program lead and learning designer on the team, the incumbent translates complex governance, operational, financial, and leadership concepts into engaging, user-centered learning pathways, onboarding materials, toolkits, guides, and multimedia learning assets.
The Manager collaborates cross-functionally with team members, staff and volunteer subject matter experts (SMEs), and volunteer leaders across the Technical Activities Board (TAB) and its committees, Societies and Technical Councils (S/C), and other TA aligned communities to create comprehensive volunteer and staff education and training programs for use by these audiences.
A central accountability of this role is establishing, enforcing, and continuously improving standardized formats, instructional templates, visual assets, and style guidelines. This ensures a seamless, modern, and recognizable "look and feel" across all TA volunteer training products, web resources, and presentations.
Operating with significant autonomy, the incumbent leverages modern instructional design methodologies and principles, digital learning tools, AI technologies, and Learning & Development best practices to maximize volunteer effectiveness, engagement, and operational consistency through engaging, accessible, and globally relevant content.
As part of the Volunteer Engagement & Development team, the Manager works collaboratively with colleagues responsible for live virtual and in-person training delivery, volunteer communications and web content, and cross-organizational collaboration, and may contribute to these areas. Together, the team is responsible for all volunteer training and resources for Technical Activities.
This role reports to the Senior Manager, Technical Activities Volunteer Engagement & Development and functions as an individual contributor and team member. This position will have no direct reports.
Key Responsibilities- End-to-End Program Management & Instructional Design
- Lead the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of interactive, scalable learning programs and multi-media toolkits supporting the volunteer lifecycle (onboarding, role-based training, and leadership development).
- Apply established instructional design frameworks to convert complex IEEE policies, governance structures, and workflows into digestible, engaging learning modules.
- Move training assets beyond traditional slide decks by building interactive e-learning courses, microlearning modules, scenario-based exercises, video guides, and downloadable job aids.
- Conduct systematic learning needs assessments and gap analyses across TA volunteer roles to prioritize program development.
- Serve as the lead content developer for volunteer toolkits, quick-reference guides, e-learning assets, and leadership manuals.
- Manage the architecture and continuous management of a centralized Volunteer Training & Resource Catalog.
- Leverage modern authoring tools and generative AI applications to prototype, build, and refresh interactive training assets.
- Monitor Learning & Development trends, technological advancements, and educational software innovations to recommend creative solutions for modernizing IEEE volunteer resources.
