Job Description
Progress Rail Signaling Spa (part of Caterpillar) is looking for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated Software Designer based in Italy, open to our office in Pistoia.
The role requires full lifecycle involvement: analyze requirements, design, test, and develop software for automated traffic control systems. Software Engineers will also document processes with diagrams and flowcharts.

Founded in 1958 (as ECM), the company has been servicing railway infrastructure for over sixty years. It specializes in power supply units, LED signalling systems, Automatic Train Protection Systems, ERTMS, and a scalable Computer Based Interlocking system.

Job Duties (Responsibilities)

Improve system quality by identifying issues and common patterns, and develop standard operating procedures.
Follow CENELEC prescriptions for safety system development (SIL
4) in accordance with EN  standards.
Enhance applications by identifying opportunities for improvement, making recommendations, and designing and implementing systems.
Maintain and improve existing codebases and conduct peer review changes.
Liaise with colleagues to implement technical designs.
Investigate and use new technologies where relevant.
Write reports and give presentations to managers and colleagues.

Experience and Qualifications

Required:

Consistent professional experience in a similar position acquired in multinational industrial contexts in transportation, railway, or signalling.
Proven experience with high‑level programming languages such as C, C++, Java, etc.
Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
Passion for solving problems and providing workable solutions.
Knowledge of algorithms and data structures.
Strong analytical and reasoning skills with ability to visualize processes and outcomes.
Proficiency in troubleshooting software issues and debugging large codebases.
Outstanding communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Good English (B2).

Preferred: experience with real‑time systems and knowledge of railway control standards.
