The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who sets and upholds standards for high-quality care. They hold responsibility and accountability for delivering nursing care, managing patient needs through independent judgement, communication, and teamwork. They build collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to support positive outcomes across the care continuum.
Responsibilities:
+ Applies evidence‑based practice to support clinical improvements.
+ Builds positive relationships with leaders, providers, staff, patients, and families.
+ Functions effectively in complex settings with shifting priorities; demonstrates strong clinical judgment and critical thinking.
+ Maintains physical capability for patient care tasks.
+ Teaches patients, families, students, and new staff using sound learning principles; supports ongoing development and open feedback.
+ Develops holistic, patient‑centered care plans; coordinates care and assists physicians.
+ Identifies clinical and psychosocial issues; communicates clearly with the care team and documents thoroughly.
+ Aligns practice with organizational standards to improve safety, quality, and satisfaction.
+ Engages in professional development, shared governance, and change initiatives; supports team members and practice improvements.
+ Demonstrates accountability, cultural awareness, healthy work habits, and attention to workplace safety.
+ BSN preferred
+ Minimum 6 months experience preferred
+ Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit.
+ Must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ UPMC approved national certification preferred.
+ Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
+ Act 33 / Act 34 / Act 73 with renewal
* Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
