THE OPPORTUNITY
Put your mechanical expertise to the test and join the Department of Transportation as a Sr. Equipment Mechanic supervising, directing, and reviewing the maintenance and repair of heavy and light road maintenance and construction equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide lead direction, training and work review to employees assigned to troubleshoot, overhaul, repair and maintain heavy and light equipment such as trucks, graders, rotary plows and caterpillars; organize and assign work, set priorities and follow completion of assigned work.
- Provide input into selection decisions, performance evaluations and disciplinary matters.
- Inspect and evaluate equipment; prepare work orders; estimate time and material requirements; provide technical assistance to staff; review and evaluate completed work.
- Read and interpret shop manuals and specifications in performing work; overhauls, repair and maintain vehicles, equipment, engines, driveline components, fluid drives, pumps and their component fuel, electrical, computer, hydraulic and power transmission systems.
- Instruct and provide for the training of staff in work methods, use of tools and equipment and relevant safety precautions.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of reports and records, including timecards, worksheets, work orders, reports, maintenance requests, etc.
- Direct the ordering and maintenance of an adequate inventory to accomplish assigned jobs.
- Respond to questions and complaints from other departments and divisions.
- Recommend special work required or necessary equipment maintenance; obtain estimates for required services and materials and recommend vendors.
- Ensure appropriate safety precautions and equipment are being utilized; conduct safety meetings; ensure appropriate accident reports are filed.
- Schedule and coordinate activities with other County departments and outside vendors; serve as liaison between user departments and staff regarding policies and procedures and to resolve problems.
- Drive vehicles and operate a wide variety of equipment; test equipment.
- Respond to emergency situations as necessary.
- Utilize personal computers to track equipment maintenance and repair for cost and scheduling.
- Maintain attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience: Two (2) years of journey level experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy and light construction equipment at a level equivalent to the County's class of Equipment Mechanic II.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid commercial Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission and air brakes and Tanker Endorsement. Some positions may also require maintaining a Hazardous Materials Endorsement which must be obtained within six (6) months from hire date.
- Must regularly lift and remove or install parts weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.
- Must be willing to work night and weekend shifts.
