Position: Blood Gas Testing Veterinarian (Seasonal)

Overview

The Racing Division of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is hiring a Seasonal Blood Gas Testing Veterinarian for April through November. The role reports to the Chief Commission Veterinarian and involves maintaining Commission paperwork, supervising the testing area, and ensuring racing quality and integrity in the Commonwealth.

Typical Duties
  • Maintain relevant Commission paperwork.
  • Collect pre‑race blood samples from race horses.
  • Ensure each sample is properly sealed immediately in the presence of the testing assistant and the trainer’s representative.
  • Ensure all samples are properly secured and documentation is complete and provides continuity of evidence.
  • Monitor activities of occupational licensees for compliance with 205 CMR 3.00 or 4.00.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Chief Commission Veterinarian.

Experience, Education, and Training
  • Current licensure with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Veterinary Medicine or willingness to become licensed prior to beginning work.
  • Previous experience working with horses, preferably in a regulatory setting.
Employment Details

The Blood Gas Testing Veterinarian may be scheduled on an as‑needed basis depending on the schedule of live racing days at the assigned track. The position requires irregular hours, including weekends and holidays. The veterinarian will be compensated hourly for a minimum of five hours per day scheduled; compensation may be adjusted for actual hours worked if all tasks for the day are not completed.

Check

The successful candidate must pass an extensive background check conducted by the Massachusetts State Police, including a full credit check, CORI, fingerprinting, drug test, reference checks, review of IRS Income Tax Transcripts for the last four years, and a Certificate of Good Standing from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
