Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday / 8:00 a.m.

- 5:00 p.m., 7:00 a.m.

- 4:00 p.m.

The Digital Media Forensics Unit was formed in 2015 and grew to four specialists and one supervisor, handling over 4,600 requests for digital media assistance in 2022. The unit specializes in collecting, enhancing, and analyzing digital media evidence from crime scenes, and all personnel are Cellebrite certified.

Summary of Duties
  • Respond to crime scenes and supervise digital media collection.
  • Supervise on-call response to crime scenes and technical emergencies.
  • Supervise, schedule, review, and evaluate the work activities of assigned staff; approve timesheets and payroll; coordinate with police supervisors to ensure priorities are met and quality is consistent.
  • Examine and evaluate digital media evidence and communicate with law enforcement regarding significance.
  • Review and approve digital media collection reports.
  • Supervise and carry out digital media training.
  • Pursue continuing education to keep the digital media section current with technological advances.
  • Meet with other supervisors and the Forensic Services Division Manager to coordinate responsibilities.
  • Be available on an on‑call basis to assist at crime scenes or with emergency technical issues related to digital media.
  • Examine and evaluate evidence to determine techniques and procedures to develop usable images while preserving integrity.
  • Assist with the analysis and clarification of digital media (video, audio, photographic) for law enforcement or other stakeholders.
  • Assist Police Department personnel with cell phone data extractions using Gray Key or Cellebrite, and provide supplemental reporting.
  • Assist with training of personnel in new hardware and software applications related to digital media.
  • Coordinate with administrative and command staff to analyze workflows and presentation needs within the Police Department.
  • Testify as an expert witness in criminal or civil court or other public hearings regarding forensic work and evidence integrity.
  • Assist with procurement and implementation of new equipment and/or software related to digital media.
  • Ensure forensic software licenses are maintained and renewed as needed.
  • Participate in a professional organization to discuss and further the field of Digital Forensics.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule.

Typical Decisions

The incumbent must exercise technically accurate judgment in selecting, implementing, and evaluating digital media and related technologies for law enforcement and public safety applications. Discretionary judgment is required in performing work, and adherence to evidence preservation and chain‑of‑custody guidelines is mandatory.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of

Various digital media technologies, audiovisual equipment, and software for recording, format conversion, image/audio clarification, and publication. Preferred knowledge of public safety procedures, Microsoft server software, Active Directory, and audiovisual presentation hardware and software.

Skill in

Effective communication (verbal and written), supervision of personnel, record organization, customer service, conflict management, independent work, adaptability, technology requirement determination, resolution of technical issues, and operation of forensic equipment and software.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, digital media forensics, criminal justice, or related field is required. A Master’s degree in related fields is preferred.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience with digital media, computers, and cell‑phone extractions in a law‑enforcement environment, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
