Volunteer IT Director – 5–10 hours per week

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A SEASONED IT DIRECTOR with the Headset of a CIO and the Hands‑on Skillset of an IT Manager.

This is a volunteer position for a non‑profit organization.

  • Must live within ~10 miles of Plano, Texas.
Organization Overview

Top Achievers Foundation (TA), based in Plano, Texas, is a 501(c)(3) non‑profit organization focused on delivering holistic programs that inspire and develop high achievement for youth throughout Plano and Collin County. Since 1996, TA has pioneered programs that help students in Plano and Collin County grow into confident, purpose‑driven leaders. Our five programs – STEAM, Esports, Financial Literacy, Basketball, and Mentorship – provide outstanding opportunities for middle, high, and elementary school students to develop academically and athletically while exploring careers, building skills, and discovering success beyond the classroom.

TA is managed by an Executive Director and a Chief Operating Officer, along with Program Managers for each of the five programs. A Communications Director ensures content is created, updated, and published via the website, newsletter, and social media, supported by a contract Website Manager.

Key IT Goal

Help lead Top Achievers’ operational initiatives to scale from tens of thousands of “High Quality Kid Hours” per year to hundreds of thousands of hours each year.

Job Responsibilities
  • Support the COO and manage overall IT operations, providing leadership in the development and execution of strategic, tactical, and operational IT initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the COO and five Program Managers to develop and grow program capacities and improve workflows for the STEAM, Esports, Financial Literacy, Basketball, and Mentorship programs.
  • Work with TA staff and volunteers to automate processes that enable data collection, analysis, and application to help TA grow and scale effectively.
  • Surfacing actionable data that improves TA marketing & PR initiatives to attract and support more children in the five programs.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on expanding the reach and enhancing the effectiveness of TA’s five programs.
  • Represent TA to all constituents – youth, parents, volunteers, partners, donors, and others – as an effective ambassador.
  • Perform other duties as agreed upon with the COO.
Key Capabilities Required
  • Track record of designing, building, operating, and supporting IT capabilities that support significant scalable growth.
  • Strong ability to develop and achieve objectives while surfacing and applying data in support of objectives.
  • Business acumen believing technology should support business objectives rather than the reverse.
  • Hands‑on love of spreadsheets and ability to move beyond spreadsheets to select and implement software applications as needed.
  • Strong interest in marketing and ability to use data to continually grow and improve operations based on market feedback.
  • Excellent communication and team‑development skills with a proactive, anticipatory, team‑building orientation.
  • Passion for serving diverse and underserved youth and their families.
More Detailed IT Requirements
  • Manage our website and external web manager to sustain high availability while making updates rapidly and reliably to support evolving needs.
  • Manage IT beyond the public website, addressing intranet and extranet functionality.
  • Strong skillset and passion for Google Sheets and Google collaboration tools; ability to prototype and deploy functionality quickly.
  • Strong with spreadsheets and able to address all facets of computing and networking, hardware and software, security, data collection, and analysis.
  • Comfortable leading system and solution selection at architectural, design, development, deployment, operation, and support levels, including database design, app design, configuration, and UI design.
  • Lead initiative to migrate organization to powerful, flexible, easy‑to‑use, cost‑effective, and reliable CRM functionality without building custom systems.
  • Dependable IT Director who wants to help change the world for the better.
About You

You are a seasoned IT leader with proven success, capable of seeing the best ways to do more. You live in Plano, Texas, or nearby, and are either retired or have the flexibility to provide at least 5–10 hours per week (some during business hours, evenings, or weekends).

More About Top Achievers

This is an opportunity to scale our methods and success to much larger numbers. Fund‑raising is important but not our limiting step; we seek a volunteer IT Director who can scale the number of youth served while preserving quality outcomes. We are on the cusp of scaling by an order of magnitude or greater. With your leadership and hands‑on work, we aim to build a scalable model replicable across communities in DFW, Texas, and nationwide.
