Job Overview
At the City of Plano, our values guide us as we SERVE our city. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Signal Department as a Traffic Signal Technician II. In this role, you will work hands‑on maintaining traffic signal cabinets and lights, playing a key part in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Plano’s traffic signals.
Salary: $29.18 – $36.48 per hour.
Responsibilities- Tests and repairs signal equipment to the component level, including electromechanical, analog and microprocessor‑controlled equipment.
- Inspects traffic signal equipment to ensure signalized intersections are operating as programmed.
- Coordinates and directs traffic signal personnel in technical applications of signal construction, repair and maintenance.
- Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains traffic signal equipment.
- Assists in the construction of traffic signal equipment.
- Maintains daily work records.
- Assists Traffic Operations Engineer in the operational capabilities of microcomputer controllers.
- Leads the work activities of Traffic Signal Technician I.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of: Electrical codes applicable to the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and wiring systems; methods and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment; safety processes, procedures and practices.
- Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operating a computer terminal and peripheral equipment; conducting tests through electronic functional and other testing processes; installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems, equipment devices and controls; operating bucket trucks.
- Education: High‑school graduation or GED, completion of a technical or trade school program in Electronics preferred.
- Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment.

Certifications:
Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire);
Certification Level II with the International Municipal Signal Association preferred. - Any work‑related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above minimum qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access to Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and
Working Conditions:
Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, intersections, and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
Exposure to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, vibrations, heights, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
- $175 annual boot allowance and $175 annual jean allowance after successful completion of six (6) months probation
