Heavy Truck & Equipment Technician I, II or Senior
The City of Plano is looking for innovative and knowledgeable people to join our team as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Technician in the Fleet & Equipment Services division of the Public Works Department.
Responsibilities- Service, troubleshoot, and perform complex automotive repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctions of vehicle computer components.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and State vehicle inspections.
- Road test vehicles and equipment for proper operation prior to returning to the user department.
- Cuts, grinds, and fabricates equipment as needed.
- Order and receive parts.
- Assist and work with other technicians in performing complex repair problems.
- May respond to road calls and make on-site repairs.
- In the absence of the supervisor, may lead the work activities of others.
- May weld metal components to repair parts for equipment and vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning hydraulic and cooling systems.
- Participate in cleaning and maintaining shop equipment and work areas.
- Maintain regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule.
- Knowledge
:
Methods of servicing, troubleshooting, diagnoses, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer component malfunctions of automobiles; light, medium, and heavy duty trucks, and construction equipment;
Federal, State, and local environmental and inspection laws and regulations applicable to vehicle and equipment standards. - Skill
:
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing; using hand and power tools; operating computerized monitors, scanners, and analyzers; reading repair manuals and schematics; operating a computer terminal. - Education
:
High school diploma or GED; completion of a technical or trade school program in automotive and heavy truck technology. - Experience
:
Three (3) years of experience in repair and service of automobiles, light, medium, and heavy duty trucks, and construction equipment with on-board computer components. - Substitutions of work experience for education/experience requirements may apply.
- Licenses & Certifications
:
Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A-CDL or Class B-CDL within twelve months of hire; ability to obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety Inspection Certification within six (6) months; minimum of two (2) ASE certifications within one year (additional certifications may be required).
- Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access to Police buildings), and social security number verification.
Must possess mobility to work in and around City automotive shop facilities and perform physical tasks including lifting up to 75 pounds with proper equipment, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Work involves loud environments, varying temperatures, dust, and chemical hazards. Ability to work around machines and operate hand and power tools.
Senior, II, and I VariantsThe Senior and II/ I classifications share the same general duties with progressively higher experience expectations. The Senior Technician requires additional years of experience and certifications as specified in the job posting.
