GENERAL PURPOSEThe lifeguard serves under the direction of the Head Lifeguards and Pool Management. This position assists in the supervision of patrons of the Veterans Memorial Pool. Lifeguards enforce policies and rules about water safety. Weekly hours are part-time, seasonal (April to September), and do not exceed 29 hours per week. Weekly hours may vary depending on department needs and programming.
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIESDuties can include any of the following:
- Lifeguards oversee water activities enforcing rules and policies as needed to ensure patron safety.
- Oversees the day-to-day water safety.
- Assist in preparation for special activities and events.
- Assist in rescue procedures and fulfill roles as outlined in the Emergency Action Plan
- Assist in clean up and overall facility appearance as needed.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Aquatics and aquatic programming are very important to the residents. The lifeguard will have to manage several requests and projects at one time. He/she may have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS- Applicants must be at least 15 years of age.
- Current A.R.C. Lifeguard certification (classes are offered by PGVMP that require pre-registration)
- Ability to make sound decisions in a stressful aquatic environment. Some medium lifting is involved.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires standing and/or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which requires following basic safety precautions and procedures.
- Good communication skills, both oral and in writing.
- Good public relations and customer service skills under sometimes stressful situations
- Ability to understand written and spoken instructions.
- Ability to lift 15 to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate computers and related software programs and various office machines.
- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which requires following basic safety precautions and procedures.
No previous experience is required beyond that necessary to obtain Lifeguard Certification.
CONDITIONSThis position is expected to supervise, oversee, and monitor all areas of the pool deck in all weather conditions. They will be expected to lift, carry, and manage equipment. They may have to work odd or long hours at a time to complete special requests or projects and participate in or coordinate evening and off-hour activities. Hours may include weekends and some holidays.
Hours may vary as the season and activities dictate. This position may also, at times, participate in and lead strenuous physical activities.
