Qualifications Required:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Must be 21 years of age or older
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger bus endorsement, S endorsement, and air brake
• State of Iowa school bus operators permit
• Ability to learn operation of various buses and handicap equipment
• Useful computer skills for routing and student databases
• Successful physical, criminal background, child abuse registry checks, and pre-work screening
• Experience working in a culturally diverse environment

Desired:

• American Heart or Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification
• Knowledge of characteristics and needs of Special Education students
• Minimum one year experience operating a passenger bus

Reports To:

Transportation Director

Job Goal: Operate a school bus safely for trips outside regular schedule and activities not covered by regular drivers (e.g., field trips, athletic/events, clubs). Requires independent judgment. Responsibilities include driving, route memorization, safety, student support, vehicle maintenance, and compliance with policies.

Physical Demands: Must have dexterity, ability to assist in emergencies, lift up to 50 pounds, drag 125 pounds, and perform various physical tasks related to bus operation and safety. Accommodations may be made for disabilities.

Clothing: Street clothes; protective gear as needed.

Equipment/Tools: Cleaning supplies, radios, fuel equipment, shovels, ice scrapers.

Terms of Employment: Based on need; at least two trips per month; hourly wage starting at $22.72, increasing after six months.
