Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley – Rotating 08 Hour (United States of America)

Overview

The Phlebotomist is responsible for routine laboratory tasks including phlebotomy, specimen preparation, EKG and clerical duties. The role facilitates and documents the flow of patient specimens in and out of the laboratory; completes patient clerical information; enters specimen collection information, and other forms of communication in the computer.

What You Will Do
  • Follows established safety and department protocols when handling blood or body fluid specimens.
  • Correctly interprets physician’s test orders and requisitions correct tests in the computer system. Seeks help if unable to interpret.
  • Competently performs venipunctures, finger sticks and pediatric heel sticks to collect blood samples.
  • Collects appropriate specimens based on blood test ordered.
  • Completes positive patient identification using at least two unique identifiers before collecting sample.
  • Correctly labels samples in the presence of the patient and completes final check to ensure labels match.
  • Accurately documents collection information in the electronic record.
  • Responds to codes as designated per hospital protocol, including Code Blue, STEMI, STROKE, CODE 3, Massive Transfusion Protocol.
  • Receives specimens for testing, ensuring they are collected in appropriate container, and properly labeled. Processes orders promptly; ensures STAT orders are immediately brought to the attention of the testing staff.
  • Processes specimens for send outs to referral laboratories and other Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley (SCHTV) facilities.
  • Assists in microbiology culture setup, plating media and other types of specimen processing in Microbiology.
  • Performs EKG testing; lead placement (inclusive of adult, pediatric, rhythm strips, and special lead per physician).
  • Checks biohazard containers daily and replaces when full; closes properly when full, puts in area for biohazard pickup.
  • Maintains a clean, appropriately stocked work station. Notifies manager when inventory is low.
  • Answers Lab phones and responds to inquiries regarding status of testing or routing as appropriate.
  • Attends department and staff meetings and serves on special hospital committees as assigned.
  • Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C-I-CARE Standards of the Hospital. C-I-CARE is the foundation of Stanford Health Care – Tri-Valley’s patient-experience and represents a framework for patient-centered interactions.
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED Required
Experience Qualifications
  • Graduate of a certified program of American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) or comparable experience or 100 hours of on the job training within SHCTV – Tri-Valley. Required
  • Microbiology and Specimen Processing Preferred
  • Minimum one-year inpatient phlebotomy experience Preferred
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well with team members but can also be autonomous.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to read and write in English.
  • Basic computer and clerical skills.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique and other lab techniques.
  • Demonstrates the ability to centrifuge specimens.
  • Demonstrates the ability to aliquot specimens; including using designated label.
  • Demonstrates ability to correctly register outpatients and various types of preop patients, being mindful of different patient locations and statuses.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in laboratory.
  • Knowledge of safety, quality and joint commission standards in relation to laboratory testing.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPT required.
  • Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required.
