Police Officer
The City of Westland is seeking to hire qualified applicants to fill immediate openings for their full-time Police Officers. Applicants who are certified or certifiable Police Officers, have graduated from, are currently attending a Law Enforcement Basic Training Academy, or are lateral transfers are invited to apply. Additionally, applicants who provide proof of successful completion of the MCOLES physical and written tests and either possess an Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university or are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with 30 credits or more achieved are also welcome to apply.
The City of Westland Police Department has a mission of providing excellent police services and working in partnership with the community for its residents, visitors, and the Westland business community. The duties will include but are not limited to patrol, criminal investigation, traffic enforcement, and traffic crash investigations.

RequirementsThe selected applicants for the Police Officer position must meet the following requirements:
- A citizen of the United States.
- 21 years of age or older.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Hold a Valid driver’s license.
- Certified or certifiable Police Officers.
- Applicants who are currently attending a Law Enforcement Basic Training Academy.
- Applicants who provide proof of successful completion of the MCOLES physical and written tests AND / OR either possess an Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university or are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with 30 credits or more achieved.
For additional Bonus Points, submit proof of:
- An Associate Degree (one point) or a Bachelor’s Degree (two points).
- Proof of PSA (for existing employees only).
- Military DD-214 form (Service of 1 year or more; proof of Honorable Discharge).
Fringe benefits include Uniform allowance, holiday pay, weapons qualification pay, optical, medical and hospitalization insurance, dental, vacation, sick and personal leave days, life insurance, and pension. A detailed description follows below.
- Starting salary/compensation package of $63,000 (prior experience and lateral transfers will start at a higher pay rate) to $91,162 after 4 years.
- Top salary/compensation package of $131,708.
- Defined Benefit Pension plan with a multiplier of 2.25 or an option of a defined contribution plan with an employer match.
- Overtime opportunities.
- 18 hours of sick time per month.
- 16 paid holidays.
- 72 hours of personal time per year.
- Relaxed tattoo and beard policy.

Failure to do so will result in the rejection of your application (you will not be considered for employment) or, if not discovered until later, may result in discipline or discharge from employment. Additionally, applicants must take the written portion of their testing through EMPCO. Please ensure you meet the above requirements before paying for and taking the written test.
