5‑Axis Machinist American Rheinmetall
Base pay range: $24.00/hr – $35.00/hr
Job Summary:
Sets up and operates computer numerical control (CNC) vertical and horizontal 5‑Axis machining centers to perform machine functions such as surfacing, profiling, boring, facing, and threading parts of metallic work pieces including castings, weldments, forgings, plates, blocks, and tubing.
- Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, surface locations, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Program 5‑Axis CNC machines with Mastercam.
- Set up machines by configuring tools, offsets, and compensation; calculate tooling requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; prove part programs; 3‑point work pieces with stock models and tooling balls; hang large work pieces on horizontal machine centers.
- Verify set‑ups by measuring head clearance, machine travel, and positions, first‑run parts, and sample work pieces, adhering to international standards.
- Maintain specifications by observing machining operations; take measurements; detect malfunctions; troubleshoot processes and perform root‑cause analysis; adjust and program controls; replace worn tools; follow quality assurance procedures.
- Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and arranging repairs (Total Productive Maintenance).
- Document and communicate actions, irregularities, and continuing needs to maintain continuity among work shifts.
- Interface with Engineering, Programming, Materials, and Quality as necessary.
- Document actions by completing production and quality logs in Plex (ERP).
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
- Accomplish organization goals by taking ownership of new and different requests and adding value to job accomplishments.
- Conceptual skills, process improvement, verbal and written communication.
- Functional and technical skills, controls and instrumentation, supply management, tooling, time management, coordination, inventory control, attention to detail, judgment.
- Minimum 2 years experience with Mastercam.
- Minimum 5 years of machining experience across multiple 5‑Axis applications (Zimmermann, Apec, FPT, Mecof).
- Experience with Heidenhain and Fidia controls (preferred).
- General knowledge of QMS (ISO
9001/AS9100) and 5S practices. - General knowledge of basic fixturing.
- Crane experience (preferred).
- Mathematical proficiency: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division in all units, compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense to instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Problem‑solving skills for multiple variables in standardized situations.
- Accuracy of work with little to no rework.
- Self‑initiative to learn new tasks without direct supervision.
- Punctuality and attendance.
- Willingness to work cooperatively with co‑workers and supervisors; ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Follow quality environmental policies; knowledge of AS9100 and ISO
14001. - Follow safety procedures, security protocol, and wear proper PPE.
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and at least five years CNC machining experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience- Minimum 2 years with Mastercam.
- Minimum 5 years machining across multiple 5‑Axis applications (Soraluce experience preferred).
- Experience with Heidenhain and Fidia controls (preferred).
- General knowledge of QMS (ISO
9001/AS9100), 5S practices, and basic fixturing.
- Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks, and controlled substance testing.
- Crane experience (preferred).
- Knowledge of AS9100 and ISO
14001.
Requires physical and mental capacity to perform all essential functions. Duties include occasional standing, walking, sitting, using hands to handle tools, and reaching. May occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
