The OpportunityThis is a full-time position for a quality assurance inspector (QAI) to provide oversight for state and local agency Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). with materials produced at established structural steel fabrication facilities across the United States. Projects typically involve fabrication of bridge structural members and ancillary components, in accordance with the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.5 Bridge Welding Code, Michigan DOT (MDOT) standards, and client specifications.
Occasionally, the role includes erection and detailing reviews in the field for buildings, DOT structures, bridges, industrial, and utility projects. This position requires approximately 70% travel.
- Perform QAI services at fabrication facilities and oversee the quality control (QC) processes for the fabrication facilities nationwide on behalf of SME's clients.
- Assist with specialty reviews for structural steel, nondestructive testing, coatings, laboratory, or other services as needed to support projects or internal teams.
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Significant knowledge and experience with AWS D1.1, D1.5, and DOT standards.
- Experience in a similar or related role.
- Ability to review and interpret structural steel plans, drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Good safety and driving record.
- Approximately 70% travel.
- Preferred but not required: knowledge of nondestructive testing (UT, MT, PT), additional AWS or ASNT endorsements, structural bolting, coatings, or building code inspections.
