Northrop Grumman Defense Systems has an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support our Weapons Systems – Armament site in Plymouth, MN. The role focuses on the mechanical design of medium caliber ammunition and provides mechanical and production engineering support for development and fabrication. The position may be filled as a Principal Mechanical Engineer (Level
3) or Sr Principal Mechanical Engineer (Level
4) depending on education and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mechanical design-to-production engineering support for the development and modification of medium caliber ammunition products.
  • Provide work direction and engineering support to distributed manufacturing and test locations.
  • Investigate and solve design and manufacturing issues; develop and document manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate efforts between internal functional groups; support manufacturing and ammunition testing; interact with customers.
  • Create and maintain documentation for new and existing manufacturing programs; prepare for and support readiness reviews.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes; create test requests and support readiness reviews.
  • Coordinate manufacturing efforts across Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, Manufacturing and Test.
  • Manage Technical Data Package responsibilities, including Engineering Changes (concept through final release).
  • Provide engineering disposition on tooling, gage changes, non-conforming product, and proposed process changes.
  • Ensure documentation is maintained in the Configuration Management system.
  • Monitor In-Process Testing and Lot Acceptance Testing for compliance with performance specifications.
  • Assist in preparing engineering and program proposals and participate in customer meetings and program reviews.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
  • For Principal Mechanical Engineer (Level
    3):
    Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) plus 5 years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree plus 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to guide significant tasks, provide some work direction, mentoring, and coordination of other technical team members.
  • Experience communicating with customers, program management, and engineering management.
  • Technical understanding of mechanical/electro-mechanical mechanisms, manufacturing processes, metal fabrication, and standard assembly processes.
  • Proficiency in engineering methods and problem-solving; ability to work with multi-discipline teams, including remote collaboration.
  • Experience managing multiple projects; self-motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Suite, including MS Project.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a U.S. government secret level security clearance; eligible for access to classified information.
  • ATF-related compliance (Safe Explosive Act) as applicable for starting employment.
Senior Principal Qualifications (Level
4)
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) plus 8 years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree plus 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Same capability expectations as Level 3 with additional emphasis on leadership and cross-team collaboration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with metal coatings and heat treatments; experience with energetic materials used in medium caliber ammunition.
  • Experience with manufacture and test of medium caliber ammunition; ability to read drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Experience in AS9100D/ISO 9001:2015 or equivalent site compliance.

Primary Salary Range: $95,800.00 - $. Secondar y Salary Range: $0.00 - $0.00. Northrop Grumman uses factors such as scope, responsibilities, experience, education and market conditions to determine base salary offers. Overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and long-term incentives may apply depending on position and location.
