The primary role of the Nursing Assistant is to provide assigned residents with routine daily nursing care in accordance with established Nursing procedures, and as directed by supervisors. The Nursing Assistant reports any noted changes in the resident as they are observed. Conduct reflects the facility’s mission and values.
Qualifications- Completion of approved Nursing Assistant training program.
- Successful completion of written and skills exam, as provided from a State of Minnesota approved testing location and in good standing with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
- Must be able to pass a State of Minnesota Department of Human Services criminal background study, as well as a United States Office of the Inspector General exclusion search.
- Effective oral, written, and reading communication skills.
- Friendly and professional bedside manner.
- Assists residents with personal cares including bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting with focus on resident-directed care.
- Make every effort to meet resident’s needs by carefully following their written plan of care.
- Assist with efforts to improve resident outcomes through ambulation training, bowel and bladder retraining, range of motion, hydration and nutrition monitoring, pain control efforts and repositioning schedules; and document appropriately.
- Follows all shift routines, policy and procedures regarding accurate performance of vital signs, weights, etc.
- Delivers meals and assists residents with eating. Records accurate food and fluid intake as assigned. Report any chewing or swallowing difficulty to the nurse.
- Assist the resident with the restorative nursing program including but not limited to passive and active range of motion, ambulation with appropriate assistive devices and transfer belt.
- Assists residents in transferring using a transfer belt, device or appropriate lift while maintaining resident safety.
- Reports promptly to the nurse any changes in resident conditions.
- Answers call lights promptly and determines resident needs.
- Neatly makes and changes bed linen; ensures residents are clean, neatly dressed, and well-groomed.
- Provides information on changes in skin conditions to the nurse.
- Observe and report any noted changes in mental status to the nurse.
- Report to charge nurse all incidents and accidents involving residents or visitors.
- Follow standard precautions, facility safety policies, and work within OSHA guidelines.
- Attend in-services, education and staff meetings as required.
- Treat residents with respect and dignity; protect patient information confidentiality.
- Remain aware of and uphold the facility’s mission and values.
- Immediately report any suspected abuse or neglect per facility policy.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for residents and staff; report equipment malfunctions to the designated employee, including knowledge of Lockout/Tagout Policy and Procedure.
- Accurate documentation of vital signs, weights, intake and output per facility protocol.
- Attend designated nursing meetings, as scheduled.
- Communicate changes in resident conditions, complaints of pain and/or mobility changes to nurses; practice good body mechanics and adhere to minimal lift policies; follow transfer instructions per the care plan.
- Complete required documentation immediately after providing cares.
- Participate in Unit Quality & Safety Meetings, as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Ability to endure prolonged walking, sitting, standing, pulling, bending, and stooping. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Frequently pushes or pulls residents with weight resistance. Frequently twists, stoops, bends, squats, and kneels. Occasionally lifts and carries equipment and supplies. Frequently reaches above or at shoulder level. Ability to adapt to changes in daily work hours and schedule.
- Must be able to clearly communicate in English orally and in writing with residents and staff.
- Must be able to read small print in typed and written material.
- Possesses necessary skills to continuously comprehend and communicate with residents and co-workers, and respond to emergency alarms.
