Overview

Join to apply for the Assistant Professor of Practice, Chemistry role at Plymouth State University. The Professor of Practice title at Plymouth State is a teaching and service focused faculty designation and is not designed for faculty primarily interested in research or running a research lab. Teaching responsibilities will primarily be Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry lectures and labs as well as Analytical and Instrumental Chemistry courses.

Willingness to teach a non-traditional chemistry curriculum catering to the needs of students coming from Biology, Meteorology, Environmental Science, Forensics, and the Health Sciences is crucial. In addition, care and maintenance of analytical chemistry equipment will be part of the service component of the position. The position includes teaching and service components but does not require research or scholarship other than a dedication to best practices in scholarly teaching.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching of Undergraduate courses including Organic, General, and Analytical/Instrumental Chemistry.
  • Service to the Discipline, Academic Unit, and University
  • Care and maintenance of common analytical chemistry equipment.
Requirements

Minimum Acceptable

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or a background in organic and analytical chemistry with an MEd or EdD.
  • At least one year of teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  • Ability to teach a broad range of chemistry courses including Organic, General, Analytical, and Instrumental Chemistry.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Willingness to work very closely and collaboratively with other faculty within and beyond the discipline on curriculum design and updates
  • Strong supporter of, and experience working in a cooperative team-focused educational environment
  • Robust commitment to modern laboratory and chemical safety standards
  • Commitment to scholarly teaching and up to date, best practices in instruction and curriculum design
  • Evidence of organizational skills including attention to detail, proactive planning, and time management
Other Requirements
  • Expertise in instrumental method development, including routine maintenance of GC, HPLC, and benchtop NMR.
  • Competence in technology including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and related fundamental software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Chemistry and a year or more of undergraduate teaching experience as the primary instructor.
  • Experience teaching across disciplines or in any of the chemistry-adjacent fields listed above.
  • Experience acting as the primary academic advisor for undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in designing a curriculum that provides a rich and varied educational experience.
  • Training in modern chemical safety practices or experience running/supporting a chemical safety program.
  • Experience teaching and/or advising students who have varied preparation for college, especially first-generation students.
  • Experience with the learning and advising support software Canvas and EAB Navigate or willingness to learn.
