The Quantity Surveyor role

As a Quantity Surveyor in Plymouth, you will actively tender, estimate and measure onsite. You will work across a variety of projects, including established frameworks and core contracts with prestigious housing clients in the public and residential sectors, and other property services covering defence, commercial and education sectors.

Responsibilities
  • Measure and prepare cost estimates for contracts and tenders, highlighting any commercial risks and mitigation.
  • Prepare cost value reconciliations for contracts, identifying commercial risks and opportunities to ensure correct contract planning from the outset.
  • Work closely with the Contracts Manager to ensure productivity labour targets are agreed and issued before contract start, including direct labour incentives where possible.
  • Build strong client, supplier and subcontractor relationships, to discuss variations and progress and to seek mutually commercial and viable solutions.
  • Complete and analyse weekly site reporting, ensuring it includes adequate cost information (labour rates, performance expectations, budgets, value, progress, quality and safety).
Qualifications & Experience
  • Proven experience in a surveying role, with the commercial ownership of projects and contracts from tender and estimation stages through to final account.
  • Experience managing projects with a total value of up to £2 million annually.
  • Experience with painting, brickwork, plastering, roofing or civil/new‑build projects preferred, but not essential.
  • Experience dealing and working with direct labour teams, timesheets and subcontractors.
  • Schedule of Rates (SORs) experience.
  • An entrepreneurial, analytical and accurate approach, with a keen eye for business opportunities and negotiation.
  • Inquisitive, organised, honest and a genuine people person who thrives when collaborating with clients, trade teams and colleagues.
Benefits
  • Profit share scheme (9.33% of base salary last year).
  • Private mileage scheme and a fuel card.
  • Enhanced employer pension contribution up to 7% or a savings scheme.
  • Life, medical and permanent health insurance.
  • Annual leave with the option to buy up to 5 days or sell up to 3 days per year.
  • Access to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity for health and wellbeing support.
  • Annual pay reviews.
  • Enhanced maternity/paternity pay.
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Trade discounts from preferred suppliers, including Specsavers vouchers.
