Job Purpose

Under the direction of the Head of Provision (Secondary) and the Pastoral Lead with responsibility for attendance, the Attendance Support Officer will take day‑to‑day responsibility for supporting and improving pupil attendance and engagement.

The post holder will work closely with Pastoral Leads, Heads of Provision, pupils, and families to develop and implement targeted attendance improvement plans. The role requires proactive engagement with families, internal teams, and external agencies to identify, address, and reduce barriers to attendance, resulting in sustained improvement and/or rapid progress for individual pupils.

The Attendance Support Officer is expected to contribute ideas and strategies to promote high levels of attendance, informed by data analysis and supported by the safeguarding team.

The role includes driving the school minibus to collect identified pupils and transport them to school. Full training will be provided; however, a full UK driving licence is essential.

Daily meetings with families, Pastoral Leads, and external professionals, maintaining accurate daily records using IT systems, will be a key aspect of the role. Regular communication with parents/carers, including daily telephone contact where required, is also required.

Data will play a central role in supporting attendance. The employee will identify trends and patterns, follow the school’s Persistent Absence Policy, and contribute to termly SLT attendance review meetings to evidence impact and progress.

As the Attendance Family Support Worker, the individual will manage a targeted caseload of pupils, working with them and their families to promote positive attitudes towards education and regular school attendance. They will have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in improving outcomes for these pupils.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Work with the pastoral team to develop and implement attendance improvement plans
  • Support the consistent implementation of school attendance policies within the base
  • Drive the school minibus to collect identified pupils
  • Communicate and consult with parents/carers and external agencies
  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed and that positive attendance is actively promoted
  • Meet deadlines, complete reports, maintain accurate records and use data effectively
  • Act as a role model through professional conduct and personal presentation
  • Establish effective working relationships with colleagues and associate staff
  • Provide information, advice and guidance internally and externally, responding to routine queries in line with Trust policies and attendance procedures
  • Conduct home visits
  • Work closely with the pastoral team to identify and respond to pupil absence issues
