Full time / Permanent Role

Lead the engineering delivery of major defence infrastructure and shape the future of UK maritime capability

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as an Engineering Manager at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll take responsibility for managing the technical delivery of complex engineering projects within Babcock’s Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) business unit. This work plays a crucial role in enabling the next generation of ship and submarine programmes, including the design, build and commissioning of critical facilities that support the Royal Navy’s most advanced fleets.

Day-to-day, you’ll act as the Technical Authority and single point of contact—leading engineering definition from initial concept through to final handover. This role offers the chance to influence major capital projects, engage with multidisciplinary engineering teams and build expertise in both conventional and nuclear-regulated environments.

  • Scope and manage the technical delivery of engineering projects throughout the full lifecycle.
  • Support the Design Management Group in developing and delivering complex design solutions for safety-critical facilities, ensuring quality, time and budget expectations are met.
  • Secure, organise and lead internal and external resources according to project demands.
  • Ensure all design outputs are fit for purpose and delivered within agreed schedule and cost parameters.
  • Apply structured design processes proportionately across both conventional and nuclear facility

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 2 days in the office/onsite.

Essential experience of the Engineering Manager
  • Strong technical background with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in an engineering, construction or infrastructure environment.
  • Understanding of the engineering design lifecycle and a logical, structured approach to problem solving.
  • Experience developing and substantiating solutions for safety‑critical applications, ideally in a regulated industry.
  • Experience working on major infrastructure or large‑scale building projects.
Qualifications for the Engineering Manager
  • Degree in a STEM discipline (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or clear evidence of actively working towards registration with a professional institution.
  • Additional training or certification in project delivery, engineering management or safety-related disciplines - Desirable
