Job Description
AECOM is recruiting a Technical Director for its UK & Ireland Building Engineering team, based in South West & Wales. The role focuses on structural engineering projects involving seismic, blast and dynamic loads, particularly for Defence, Aviation and Education sectors.
LocationThis position is based across Basingstoke, Bristol and Plymouth with the SW&W structural engineering team. The successful candidate may work flexibly from any part of the UK but will need to travel to the South-west region and other UK office sites as required.
Recent Projects- HMNB Devonport:
Designed seismically qualified upgrade works for dry docks supporting deep maintenance of nuclear-powered submarines. - NPSCY:
Designed infrastructure for Australia's first nuclear-powered submarine construction yard, including seismic hazard requirements.
- Coordinate and lead technical delivery and manage commercial and resource aspects of demanding projects without supervision.
- Lead business development, client relationship management, technical leadership or team development within the structural engineering team.
- Prepare technical reports conveying complex structural engineering concepts to clients and stakeholders.
- Maintain client relationships and play a major role in business development.
- Conduct independent technical reviews of work prepared by others.
- Maintain leadership in at least one technology area.
- Approve and sign off engineering work.
- Mentor and coach team members in professional development.
- Continuously learn new skills and consider wider engineering issues related to delivered projects.
- Excellent knowledge of standard engineering practices, techniques and procedures.
- Lead in the analysis and design of seismically qualified structures.
- Engage and support safety case interface within the nuclear sector.
- Proven track record of successful project delivery within the defence sector.
- Proficient in structural design using current British Standards, Eurocodes and associated seismic design standards.
- Excellent knowledge of advanced analysis techniques such as finite element analysis; soil-structure interaction assessments desirable.
- Understanding of project management principles to support coordination of technical delivery with internal and external clients.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing proposals, technical reports and delivering presentations to clients.
- Sound knowledge of construction contracts, professional agreements and experience in client engagement during fee proposal preparation and scope agreement.
- Experienced in using commercially available design software packages.
- Effective communication in English, both written and verbal, explaining engineering principles to non-specialists.
- Ability to judge the reliability of design software and finite element results and convert them into practical engineering solutions.
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Must be a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStruct
