Job Description & How to Apply Below

Your new company

My client is a leading infrastructure organisation delivering and maintaining strategically important transport networks across the UK. They are responsible for a diverse portfolio of highways and specialist bridge maintenance contracts and are seeking an Environment & Sustainability Advisor to support environmental compliance and best practice across key operations in the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a long-term career within environmental management, working alongside operational teams on nationally significant infrastructure projects.

Your new role

As an Environment & Sustainability Advisor, you will work closely with operational managers, supervisors and site teams to improve environmental compliance and raise environmental awareness across live highways maintenance and construction activities.

You will spend the majority of your time on-site (typically 3-4 days per week), building relationships with operational teams and ensuring environmental standards are understood and embedded into day-to-day activities.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Providing practical environmental advice to site-based operational teams.
  • Supporting compliance with ecological, environmental and protected area requirements.
  • Conducting site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
  • Working with managers and supervisors to identify risks and implement improvements.
  • Delivering environmental briefings and promoting best practice across contracts.
  • Assisting with environmental management plans and incident investigations.
  • Supporting environmental reporting and performance monitoring.
  • Contributing to sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives where appropriate.
  • Liaising with environmental specialists, regulators and internal stakeholders.

The role will primarily support major highways maintenance and specialist bridge contracts, offering exposure to both complex, nationally significant projects and smaller operational accounts.

What you'll need to succeed

Applications are welcomed from candidates with practical environmental experience gained within infrastructure, highways, construction, maintenance, utilities, rail, civil engineering or similar operational environments.

You will have:
  • Experience supporting environmental compliance on construction or maintenance projects.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation and site-based environmental risks.
  • The confidence to communicate effectively with operatives, supervisors and managers.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits or compliance checks.
  • A pragmatic and solutions-focused approach.
  • A full UK driving licence.

A degree or professional membership is not essential. Practical experience, credibility on-site and the ability to engage operational teams are considered more important for this position.

Experience with ecological compliance, protected habitats, environmental permits or carbon data reporting would be advantageous, although specialist expertise is not required.

What you'll get in return
  • Salary of 30,000 - 45,000, depending on your experience.
  • Car allowance / company car.
  • Home charging point installed and funded by the business.
  • All travel and accommodation expenses covered through a central booking system.
  • Hybrid working with significant site exposure.
  • Structured career progression opportunities towards Senior Advisor and Environmental Manager positions.
  • Ongoing training and professional development.
  • The opportunity to work on nationally important infrastructure projects and specialist bridge contracts.
  • Exposure to a broad range of environmental challenges that will provide an excellent foundation for future career growth.
  • Training & personal development:
Unlock your potential with comprehensive training tailored to your growth.
  • Generous pension scheme with company contributions
  • At least 24 days of holiday plus bank holidays, and the opportunity to buy further 5 days
  • Flexible benefits package
  • 2x paid volunteering days a year
