Company:

£55,500 to £65,500 + up to 6% bonus + company car

Company car eligibility is subject to business mileage requirements. Full details will be provided during the recruitment process.

Location:

Warwick, Bristol, Peterborough, Nottingham, Warrington, Livingston or Aberdeen

Working pattern: Hybrid, with a minimum of 3 days a week on site

Travel: Regular travel across the UK

Location requirement: You must live within reasonable travelling distance of one of our main sites listed above

About the role

Process safety sits at the heart of everything we do. As a Process Safety Engineer, you'll provide expert technical leadership that helps keep our assets operating safely, reliably, and efficiently.

This is an opportunity to influence major projects, improve operational performance, and help shape process safety standards across National Gas.

Safe, reliable operations are critical to maintaining the performance of Britain's gas network. In this role, you'll play a key part in identifying risks, strengthening safeguards, and ensuring our assets and projects meet the highest process safety standards.

You'll work across a variety of projects and operational activities, partnering with engineers, project teams, and external specialists to solve complex challenges and deliver meaningful improvements. Your expertise will directly support safe decision-making, operational excellence, and the long‑term resilience of our infrastructure.

What you’ll be doing
  • Lead process safety activities for projects, including HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA studies
  • Provide technical expertise that supports safe, compliant, and effective project delivery
  • Identify opportunities to improve process safety performance across operational assets
  • Support project teams with technical queries, risk assessments, deviations, and engineering decisions
  • Develop and enhance technical standards, procedures, and process safety guidance
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes
  • Contribute to the delivery of projects that meet safety, performance, budget, and quality objectives
What you’ll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, influencing technical decisions, and making a visible impact on operational safety and performance.

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Process Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards chartership with a recognised institution
  • Strong understanding of process engineering principles and risk management
  • Experience with in process engineering, process safety, or a Major Accident Hazard environment
  • Knowledge of key UK safety legislation including COMAH, PSSR, DSEAR, PSR, and HASAWA
  • Experience leading or contributing to hazard studies such as HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • TÜV Functional Safety Professional or Functional Safety Engineer certification
  • Comp Ex qualifications including Ex01-04, Ex12a, and Ex12b
  • Experience developing engineering policies, standards, or procedures
  • Experience managing technical queries and engineering deviations within projects
  • Consultancy, design, or operational engineering experience within energy or industrial environments
Security clearance
