Financial Controller (Urgent!) – Plymouth

Trial Balance Consulting is acting as an exclusive recruiter for an environmentally focused start‑up based in Plymouth. The company has developed innovative machinery and is looking for a Financial Controller to manage the day‑to‑day financial operations and grow the finance team.

• Maintain and develop robust financial controls, systems and policies to support rapid revenue growth
• Produce high‑quality management reports and commentary for the CFO
• Oversee the accounts payable, accounts receivable and transactional functions
• Build and sustain long‑term relationships with key external stakeholders
• Prepare consolidated accounts and reconciliations
• Create budgeting and forecasting packs
• Develop capital project material
• Handle VAT reporting and HMRC statutory compliance
• Lead the monthly payroll function
• Collaborate with the senior management team on ongoing business projects

• ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualified or equivalent
• Solid commercial finance experience, ideally in engineering, construction, manufacturing, or a start‑up/tech environment
• Strong technical accounting background with commercial awareness for a rapidly evolving business
• Experience with digital accounting tools and APIs, for example Xero
• Proven people‑management skills and effective communication across departments and external stakeholders
• Dynamic, forward‑thinking problem solver with a growth mindset
