Specialist Biomedical Scientist NHS AfC:
Band 6 Job overview

This is a fixed term 1 year role to cover maternity leave. We are looking for a Band 6 biomedical scientist to cover maternity leave in the Chemistry Special Investigation section, a strong technical and analytical background is required for this role.

Biomedical scientist candidates will have HCPC registration and possession of a specialist diploma from the Institute of Biomedical Science or able to demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills in manual techniques including LCMS, ICPMS and HPLC to a Band 6 level.

Demonstrable experience of quality management is also desirable to monitor and maintain the highest standards of quality across the ISO 15189:2012 accredited clinical chemistry service.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and ‘At Risk’ status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job
  • Process biological samples including blood, urine, faeces, cerebral spinal fluid and other tissues, taking personal responsibility for the quality and authorisation of the results used in diagnosis, treatment and management of disease.
  • Possess highly developed specialist scientific skills.
  • Demonstrate a high level of skill to perform complex manual, semi-automated analytical techniques as applicable, meeting turnaround times with prompt reporting of results used in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Recognise the pathology of disease in relationship to the results produced whilst being aware of their significance in the authorisation of patient results with reference to normal ranges.
  • Plan and prioritise workload for Band 5 Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BMS and support staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Perform a key role in providing analysis of clinical specimens for a wide range of diagnostic tests to aid pathological diagnosis and monitoring of treatment regimes.
  • Utilise LCMS, ICPMS, HPLC, spectrophotometry and immunoassay, working with accuracy and precision whilst having excellent organisational skills.
  • Assist the Section lead in the management of a small team in the Chemistry Special Investigations section within Derriford Combined Laboratory, ensuring smooth day to day running of this section.
Person specification Knowledge & Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in specialist techniques, i.e. LCMS, ICPMS and HPLC.
  • Experience with in a diagnostic biochemistry setting.
  • Experience at a Band 6 level.
  • Experience with manual techniques within the discipline the post holder is expected to work.
  • Experience acting as deputy for section lead.
Qualifications
  • State registration with Health Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Successful completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • Educated to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Health Care Professions Council.
Aptitude and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, being able to deal with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proven knowledge of all health and safety issues relating to laboratory activity.
  • Accuracy/precision while under pressure.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory information systems.
